Nigeria face Mozambique in the last 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations, with a quarter-final place in Morocco up for grabs at the Fez Stadium.
The Super Eagles, beaten finalists in Ivory Coast in 2024, have made a fine start to their quest for a fourth AFCON title and first since 2013, joining Algeria as one of only two teams to win every game during the group stage.
It was not all plain sailing for Eric Chelle’s side in Group C, however, with a nervy opening 2-1 victory over Tanzania followed by a dramatic 3-2 triumph against Tunisia in which they came very close to a total collapse late on having led 3-0.
There was a stress-free finale as Chelle made eight changes for a routine 3-1 win over 10-man Uganda, knowing that their place as group winners was already assured.
Nigeria will be heavy favourites to continue their winning run against Mozambique, who have made it into the knockout stages at AFCON for the very first time on what is their fifth appearance in the competition.
The Mambas, led by Chiquinho Conde, achieved their maiden win at the finals after dispatching Gabon 3-2 in a difficult Group F, having only narrowly been edged out 1-0 by Ivory Coast and later taken the lead against Cameroon before losing 2-1 courtesy of a wondergoal.
It was enough to take them through as the best of the four top third-place finishers who joined the 12 group winners and runners-up in the last 16.
